Tommy Ton, the street style photographer behind the big-time blog Jak & Jil, celebrated his collaboration with Club Monaco last night at the company’s flagship on Fifth Avenue in New York. “The idea was for me to design something that was essential for everyday use,” Ton says. “I pretty much don’t go anywhere without a backpack, so that style was instant.” Traveling almost constantly to fashion weeks around the world requires a lot from the shutterbug, and his carryalls. Which is, perhaps, why it took almost two years to get the two bags — a backpack for guys, a canvas messenger for gals — off the ground. “They were refined again and again to make sure that they were functional and not too throwaway,” Ton says. “Inspiration came from just observing friends and” — no surprise here — “people on the street!”
