Song of the Day FM Belfast – Synthia

Every Monday through Friday, we deliver a different song as part of our Song of the Day podcast subscription. This podcast features exclusive KEXP in-studio performances, unreleased songs, and recordings from independent artists that our DJs thin you should hear. Each and every Friday we offer songs from local artists. Today’s selection, featured on the Afternoon Show with Kevin Cole, is “Synthia” by FM Belfast from their 2010 album How to Make Friends on Kimi Records.

FM Belfast – Synthia (MP3)

If you know anything about DJ Kevin Cole, you know he’s no stranger to music from really cold places. In fact, at the station we call him the “Nordic Whisperer.” His latest music offering is a fine example of a band from Reykjavík, Iceland: FM Belfast. The duo of Árni Hlöðdversson and Lóa Hjálmtýsdóttir formed the band in late 2005 as a side-project and have turned all that energy into a great full length album. Of course they’re an electronic band, but not in the traditional Icelandic sense. When compared to their more adventurous and serious Icelandic counterparts like Sigur Ros, FM Belfast do a good job of not taking themselves too seriously — at all. The band has no problem singing songs about running around in their underwear. The lo-fi casio keyboards and simple beats are in full-effect throughout the album, adding to the home-spun DIY feel of it all. Their live-show continues to receive wild praise and be a live-extension of the music they represent; letting everyone join in on the fun!

Have you ever imagined yourself in a cool, low-lit, Icelandic Nightclub dancing the night away to Euro-disco beats with all your best friends? FM Belfast was probably the band playing in the background.

They have a great website you can check out here as well as a MySpace page where you can hear more. The band is currently on tour in the U.K. Speaking of fun songs, here they are performing “Underwear” during an exclusive session for KEXP recorded during Iceland Airwaves in Reykjavik, followed by the new official video with lots of creepy/fun dancing:
